Looking after poorly animals

This week we have been having problems with some of the animals in the Pet shop in Turtles class. Two of the pets have been poorly and needed to go to the vets. Luckily Pakefield Vets is not far from school. The made an appointment and off we went.

The vet was very helpful. He talked to us about what might be wrong and showed us how he checks the animals when they arrive.

It wasn’t long before both pets were feeling better and we could take them back to school.

Animals in Antarctica

Year 1 are working hard finding out all there is to know about animals. Following on from the recent arrival of two baby penguins, we have been thinking about how animals in the Antarctic stay warm.

Blubber experiment

We pretended we were one of the animals living in our polar regions. All we needed was ice, lard and some plastic bags.

First we put ice into water in two buckets. Next we got two plastic bags and filled one with lard. Then we put one hand in the bag with lard and one hand in the plastic bag with nothing in. Finally we put both hands into the icy water and waited.

We soon discovered that the hand in the plastic bag with lard kept us warm when we put it into ice cold water. So we learnt that the blubber keeps animals that live in cold climates warm. Why don’t you try it at home?

100th Day at School – Turtles class

Today we have been busy thinking about where we might end up if we walked 100 steps from our classroom. we made lots of predictions that included McDonalds, Lennox’s house, the dinner hall, Mr Paynes office and many more.

There was only one way to find out! First we tried going out of the inside door. 1, 2 miss a few 99, 100 (in the words of Isobel). We soon found ourselves in the corridor outside Mr Paynes office. But we didn’t stop there, what if we went out of the other door? Lennox was convinced we would reach his house!

1, 2……….we were definitely going to have to go out of the gate……

…..but soon reached 100. We got as far as the high school field. Finally some of us wanted to try out one more idea. Where would we get to if we started at the main door to the Rainbow building? So we set of again this time we got excited when we reached the stairs with 2 steps to spare! We made it to step 2, we were definitely upstairs!

Lowestoft

Year 1 are busy learning about Lowetsoft. We went on a long walk to have a look at some of the things Lowestoft has.

Charley’s dad came to tell us all about old Lowestoft. We found out Lowestoft used to have trams that ran along the seafront.

On Monday we found lots of fish and nets in out classroom. We enjoyed looking, touching and smelling them.

Now we are ready to think about what we want to find out about Lowestoft.

Wolf spotted!

After a phone call from the police and several sightings of a wolf in Pakefield, the children have been making posters to warn others.

Then the discovery of mysterious footprints in the garden led the children to design and build wolf traps.

Some traps were so good that we got ourselves caught in them!

Indoors we have been busy practising using the language of ‘greater than and less than’ to compare groups of objects.
